Porous Paving for a progressive council

One of the most important features for public safety is a non slip surface. Particularly where the foyer is exposed to rain and frequent, heavy foot traffic. The library foyer is surprisingly demanding in this regard with the large number of visitors through the day and the range of mobility it must cater for – from the very young that tend to run around – to the very old, which have mobility scooters and walking sticks.

StoneSet has been used to pave the entry to a number of public space locations in Sydneys Inner West. In particular the Marrickville Library foyer was paved using StoneSet in 2016 to meet heritage requirements of the building.

Undertaking building works for the upgrade of Haberfield library, Inner west council invested in a renovation of the facilities in 2021, which included a number of applications of StoneSet, which included an interesting application of StoneSet in the stairwells.

  • Updated library interiors and layout making it more user friendly and fit for purpose
  • Newly painted interiors, new carpets, shelving and furniture, air conditioning
  • Improved accessibility including installation of new lift, internal ramps and accessible toilets
  • Better functioning community rooms
  • Improved connection between the library and community space via an upgraded garden/courtyard
  • Reduced glare in the library
  • Improved street presence by reinstating the entrance to its original location
  • New music performance/rehearsal space and kitchen facilities on level one
  • New energy/water saving measures such as energy efficient air-conditioning, lighting systems, rainwater re-use and water saving fixtures

Natural stone colours on the Streetscape

Pathway Tree surrounds

Natural stone has an ability to bring a softness to the streetscape and for this reasons it’s often used in natural colours around tree surrounds on public pathways, school grounds and hospitals.

A far better option that loose fill mulch, loose gravel and other soft fall rubber type applications, StoneSet is ideal because it extends the walkable area of the pathway as well as being fully porous paving for the tree roots, encouraging a healthier tree canopy.

Called in for supply and installation of Porous paving tree surrounds at the base of 7 large gum trees on the pavement, the works were completed over 1 day using the clear binding polyurethane resin.

Wellington Park Porous Pathways

Project QuickStats

Location Wellington Square Perth, Western Australia
Stone Colour  Pitch Black
Total Area 126 square meters
Date Installed 17-03-2021

This week our team travelled to Perth to work with our approved installers TIRO Earthworks, to install 126 square meters worth of porous paving on behalf of Civil Engineers Avanteers.

The project was in Wellington Square in Perth, on the eastern side of the CBD. The City of Perth has undertaken major works in renovating the park, beginning early 2020.

StoneSet porous paving was one of the works scheduled this month, to be completed towards the end of the project. Purportedly costing some a $18.7 million to upgrade, overall the works included “construction of a new playground, basketball courts, new paths and facilities and a place of reflection to commemorate the Stolen Generation.”

Porous Paving for Public Pathways

Not dissimilar to many other public paths, the requirements were familiar – The solution had to be porous and non slip, to both support the groundwater retention and reduce flash flooding and runoff.

The more obvious advantage was of course the beautiful natural stone look for the CBD park on the pathways and of course be non slip for the parks patrons.

StoneSet has recently been installed on a number of large park pathways across Australia, including Rockhampton City Council and Berrima community pathways.

The product is highly popular given the imperative upon governments to increase urban tree canopy cover and do more to reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect.
