Stay Cooler by the Pool
We’re often asked “is porous paving cooler than normal paving, is it less hot underfoot?” to which our answer is, Yes, StoneSet does feel cooler under your feet, which is particularly important around a pool where people aren’t wearing shoes!
The truth is all paving materials reach the same temperature in the middle of the day. Whether it’s our StoneSet Stone, Terracotta pavers, Concrete, even…Carpet! Whilst some may take longer to heat up than others, they all reach the same temperature in the ‘dead heat’ of the day, when comfort underfoot matters most.
We mention above ‘carpet’ to demonstrate a point about how bare feet experience the temperature. Intuitively, carpet is much cooler to stand on than concrete. Similarly it’s hotter to walk on cement with wet feet than it is when they are dry.
Both these examples illustrate differences in conduction, and why its actually ‘conduction’ (rather than temperature) that determines how cool or hot a surface feels to walk upon.
Naturally we know water aids the transmission of heat. So wet feet coming out of the pool always feel hotter walking across the pavement than before we hopped into the pool.
Similarly, unlike solid cement, carpet is an upholstery and has air between its many fibres, making it soft and cushioning. Polyeseter and wool are natural insulators and so don’t conduct heat very well. The net result, when carpet and cement are at the same temperature there is far less transmission on of heat into your bare feet.
Its important to understand the relationship between the paving and comfort. Its actually the amount of conduction that determines comfort when walking barefoot around the pool. The amount of contact between your feet and the paving matters most is how we experience the temperature and that depends on conduction.
Our product is porous – 25% of StoneSet by volume is air or ‘gaps’. Heat is felt through conduction, meaning the less your surface area of your feet that are in contact with a surface, then yes it ‘feels cooler’. the sun heats our stone to the same temperature of concrete, but because there are air gaps, StoneSet feels cooler under your feet.
Pool Resurfacing is easy!
StoneSet can be used as a stone overlay or topping, to resurface at 16mm depth, giving you the look of brand new pool paving as well as being permeable paving.
Thats how StoneSet can be used to resurface any existing rigid surfaces such as travertine pavers and for concrete resurfacing but can include;
- Travertine pool paving
- Pool pavers
- Sandstone
- Patchwork concrete
- Asphalt
Perfect to cover tired, old, even cracked surfaces while eliminating excavation costs, saving time and money. In this instance the surface is still permeable, so fewer puddles but the water runs off over over the existing impervious base.
