Roof top refurbishment

Pool surrounds application – StoneSet slip resistant

The 13 storey Melbourne city complex, Fawkner Towers, was in need of a refurbishment to the popular roof top areas. The dated terracotta tiles were no longer in-line with the evolving atmosphere, and a change had to be made.

The challenge that faced Building Manager, Frank Cotela, was how he could transform the large area without disturbance to the 12 levels beneath. The traditional method of replacement was simply not viable. Beyond the interruption that jackhammering over 500m2 of tiles would bring to the residence, the time and cost associated with this did not meet the project’s timeline or budget.

Frank started to research his options. He needed a product that was high-end in look but reasonable in price; that was efficient in installation though at the same time non-disruptive (no one wants to tamper with the waterproofing on a 13th floor); and that would not only last, but remain stunning and require minimal maintenance while doing so. Finishes such as new tiles, tile paint, polyurethane flakes, and concrete finishes were explored, though none could meet all of the requirements. Then finally, Frank found StoneSet – an overlay system that could be laid on-site with minimal disruption, could meet the project’s budget and time constraints, and could sustain the look and maintenance goals he was after.

Within a week of Frank’s call, we had visited the site, forwarded a quote, and received the go ahead. With limited time before the install, our sales team spent the ensuing weeks helping Frank with a colour scheme, while the logistics team worked to ensure that such colours could be made available in the strict timeframe, shipped and on the 13th floor by the first installation date.

StoneSet’s 6mm Ash, 3mm Apollo, and 6mm Charcoal Ash provided the colour pallet for the refurbishment. The warm tones and soft touch of the 3mm Apollo provided the perfect look and feel for the pool surrounds. Laid at a 16mm depth, the stones then continued across various sections of the rooftop, being separated only by another blend – 6mm Charcoal Ash.

The juxtaposition of the 2 styles created beautifully defined spaces providing an atmosphere for everyone. Almost hidden at the back of the rooftop is also a small courtyard with grass surrounds. Here, the darker 6mm Charcoal stones offered a more sophisticated setting, and provided a beautiful contrast against the grassy area.

In terms of logistics, by the time of install, the team had managed to prepare 14 tonnes of stone and resin (batched individually for each colour, size and area), shipped it to Fawkner Towers, and then with the help of a crane, the material made it the 13th floor.

With the project now complete, Frank could not be happier with the entire process:

The website provided plenty of information which then as a Building Manager I could relay to owners and show exactly what they were getting for their money. The range of colours was pretty impressive but also any combination of stone could be mixed creating patterns and different shades throughout. The fact that I was in Melbourne and Stoneset was in Sydney had no impact on the project, everything was flawless.

The stone looks and feels amazing; the staff that flew in from Sydney was brilliant. The staff provided information as they went and kept us informed about all movements and at the end of the day cleaned all areas. The feedback from owners has been extremely positive and as one person said” You go to work in the morning and come home to a complete new look.”I would be more than happy to recommend StoneSet as a company and the product you provide the help.
