Background
GK Bruinsma homes build units and homes across the East and South East of Melbourne. As a company providing a full construction service, GK Bruinsma homes will build the house of your dreams whilst taking care of fixtures and fittings, plumbing, electrical work, flooring and landscaping.
Situation
Working on a new build in Bentleigh, GK Bruinsma homes were looking at installing a driveway that would accommodate the roots of a tree that grew nearby. It was important that the addition of this driveway not interfere with the already established tree whilst providing a system that would allow rainwater to pervade the surface. Not only that, with a sleek new house, the material had to compliment the newly constructed building.
Why StoneSet?
All StoneSet products are fully permeable and allow water to pervade the surface immediately. If StoneSet is being used with gravel cells then a totally permeable system can be incorporated, allowing water to flow right through to the water table.

StoneSet is 100 times more flexible than concrete and so is an excellent choice if there is likely to be movement from hidden roots. StoneSet is less likely to crack and break as it will accommodate the tree and it's roots.
We use natural aggregate and coloured recycled glass to cre
ate beautiful paving that is laid to a seamless finish. Our huge range offers customers endless choice, allowing them to find the perfect product for their project.
StoneSet is quick and easy to install and cures in around 4 hours allowing customers to walk on the product in around 6 hours and drive on it the next day. There is minimum disruption and you can be assured of a quick result.
Solution
A team
of 4 completed the 150m2 driveway in around 5 hours. GK Bruinsma chose to create a fully permeable system by utilising StoneSet in conjunction with Atlantis gravel cells. The team dug down to a depth of 90mm and then laid a base of sand at 15mm depth to ensure the surface was nice and flat.

Then the Atlantis gravel cell was laid at 50mm before being filled with permeable road base. This left space for 25mm worth of StoneSet to go on top. The customer selected a 6mm Bundaberg; a good size to ensure fast permeation rates and strength for the cars that would be using the driveway. There were slabs leading up to the door that had already been laid and StoneSet were able to lay our paving around these to create an interesting feature.
Result
They driveway looked perfect and really helped to enhance the exterior aesthetics of the new home. The creamy colour of the Bundaberg stone matched the greys of the house and complimented the slabs that had already been laid.
The home now has a fully permeable driveway that will allow any rainwater to flow to the roots of the tree. The StoneSet driveway will be both strong and flexible, allowing the tree movement with little risk of cracking whilst being able to bear the weight of any vehicular traffic.
Beautiful and practical, StoneSet provide the perfect solution.
