Background
Canton Beach is located on the Central Coast of New South Wales and comes under the jurisdiciton of Wyong Shire Council.  Adjacent to the impressive Tuggerah Lakes, the Canton Beach area attracts many tourists and is particularly popular for families with children.

Situation
Following a Wyong Shire Council initiative and with moves from the Federal Government to help stimulate the economy, work has begun on a public playground near Canton Beach.  The council wanted to create an innovative recreational area that could be used and enjoyed by everyone, encompasing specific facilities for those with disabilities.  The project was designed to be a sensory masterpiece, with colour, sound and scent incorporated to assist the visually impaired.  The park will also be easily accessible for wheelchairs and the play equipment has been designed to suit the needs of everyone, both with and without disabilities.

For the paved areas involved in this project, the council's main priority was to use a product that could provide a long lasting colour and be used to create the patterns they had specified.  The pathways for this project needed to be more than functional; they needed to be part of the experience.

Why Stoneset?
If long lasting colour is a requirement then StoneSet is the perfect choice.  StoneSet uses a recycled glass system where clear glass is pigmented with colour.  Inevitably the top layer of paving will always be worn down through day-to-day use, but because of this pigmentation, StoneSet won't fade.  StoneSet's resin technology also guarantees against UV degradation so you're guarded against yellowing.  The idea of recycled glass might seem surprising but all of our recycled glass is tumbled and once bound in resin, feels so smooth that you can walk on it barefoot.

For parks and playgrounds, StoneSet is a popular choice.  Depending on your needs, StoneSet will design a recipe uniquely for your project to ensure the paved area is suited to the expected traffic , be it pedestrian or vehicular.  In this case a medium graded material was used in anticipation of pedestrian traffic.  StoneSet is also fully bound, ideal for an area with heavy pedestrian use as this eliminates problems of loose aggregate being kicked around.  And all StoneSet products are totally permeable, helping to reduce surface puddling and assist with issues surrounding storm water run off.

Solution
StoneSet, along with approved installers Naturally Green, used 6mm Red Glass to create patterns running through the concrete.  The StoneSet was used to produce letters spelling out "Canton" and other shapes designed to guide patrons around the site.  The StoneSet was laid directly over a concrete base at a 16mm depth.  Two members of the StoneSet team and two members of the Naturally Green team completed the job, which totalled 30 square metres, in one day.

Result
The use of Red Glass in this project was an excellent choice, really adding a vibrant colour to the pathways in the park.  The seamless finish adds to the effect, creating bold and vivid patterns with the letters of "Canton" standing our particlarly well.  The council have created a visual wonder and StoneSet are very pleased to have been part of such an interesting project.
